Reef Fishing vs Barramundi Fishing: They Are Not the Same Sport

The only thing reef fishing and barramundi fishing share is a marina. Reef fishing is deep water, heavy gear, coral trout and emperor on the plate. Barramundi fishing is freshwater impoundments and tidal rivers, baitcasters, twenty-pound braid, and a fish that tail-walks across the surface when you hook it. So before you hand over a deposit, work out which sport you actually want. If you want big water, heavy tackle, and a cooler full of fillets, a reef day is the obvious call. The

Lake Tinaroo is not the outer reef, and that matters

Tinaroo is stocked by the Cairns Sportfishing Club. The biggest pulled out was 44.6 kg. Most charter targets are 80 to 100 cm. The water is flat. There is no swell. Your wife who gets seasick on a reef charter will be perfectly fine at Tinaroo. That single fact settles more family arguments than anything else I write on this site.

The reef, by contrast, is a proper offshore run. On a good day it is glassy and glorious. On a marginal day the swell rolls in from the Coral Sea and a chunk of the boat spends the ride out at the rail. There is nothing shameful about it, but it is real, and it is the single most common reason people tell me they wished they had chosen differently. The two also fish nothing alike. On the reef you drop bait or jigs straight down over structure and wind hard when something loads up. This is the question that quietly decides most bookings. If you want to eat your catch: reef. Most charter boats fillet on the way home and you take home coral trout for dinner. There are few better meals in Australia than reef fish you caught that morning, cooked simply that night.

Barramundi is mostly catch and release. You want the photo, not the fillet. Impoundment barra especially are prized as sport, revived and returned so the next angler gets a crack at the same fish grown a little bigger. If your idea of a great day ends with a cooler and a frying pan, do not book a catch-and-release sportfishing trip and expect to be happy about it.
